(Formerly an acronym for Radio Detection and Ranging.) A technique for detecting
targets in the atmosphere or in space by transmitting radio waves (e.g., microwaves) and sensing the waves reflected by objects. The reflected waves (called "returns" or "echoes") provide information on the distance to the target and the velocity of the target, and also may provide information about the shape of the target.
