DEFINITION
Photoelectric Effect

The process whereby a gamma ray (or x-ray photon) with energy somewhat greater than that of the binding energy of an electron in an atom, transfers all its energy to the electron which is consequently removed from the atom. Since it has lost all its energy, the photon ceases to exist.
