1. The level of fishing mortality (rate of removal by fishing) that produces the greatest yield from the fishery2; 2. A biological reference point. It is the fishing mortality rate that maximizes equilibrium yield per recruit. FMAX is the F level often used to define growth overfishing. In general, FMAX is different (and higher) than FMSY depending on the stock-recruitment relationship. By definition, FMAX is always higher than F0.1.5
