A potential type of fire in which conditions for sustained active crown fire spread are met but conditions for crown fire initiation are not. If the fire begins as a surface fire then it is expected to remain so. If it begins as an active crown fire in an adjacent stand, then it may continue to spread as an active crown fire (Scott and Reinhardt, 2001).
