DEFINITION
Advanced Technology Demonstration

An Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) is a pre-acquisition mechanism for the warfighter to explore military utility and potential of technologies to support warfighting concepts. This is a pre-acquisition mechanism for the warfighter to explore the technical feasibility, affordability, and potential of technologies to support warfighting concepts. A successful ATD will allow accelerated entry into the acquisition life-cycle (such as at milestone B or C). ATDs are relatively large scale in resources and complexity, but typically focus on an individual system or subsystem. The user is involved throughout the process. Experimentation is with soldiers in a real or synthetic environment. It has a finite schedule of 5 years or less with exit criteria established by the MATDEV and TRADOC.
